Friday the 13th part 6: Jason Lives (1986)

Tommy Jarvis makes his return to the big screen for the third time, with a third actor bring used in his place.

He and his friend decide they need to unearth Jason so they can incinerate his corps as it will be the only way he is sure to never come back to cause chaos ever again.

Once he witnesses Jason's body, Tommy immediately loses his composure and starts brutally attacking the body, going as far as to spearing him with a fence post. But as Tommy's luck would have it, a lightning bolt came down, sending a large electrical charge into the fence post and in turn, Jason's body.

This revives Jason and soon he begins his reign of terror anew.

The dialogue in this movie seemed to have been improved severely as compared to the series previous entries which always make a movie better, no matter how you spin it,

Another amazing series of kills in this film. I cannot even begin to choose a favorite as there were so many great ones including the "trailer" and the "heart transplant" as a few examples.

The ending of the movie was great, they found a solution that was plausible and worked to end the film properly as well as create an opening for the next chapter of the series.

This was all around a great film, I loved it beginning to end thank to the kills, the dialogue, the introduction and the final scene. Just pure gold if you ask me!
I'm going to gladly give part 6 an 8.5 out of 10.

Friday the 13th: A new beginning (1985)

Five years have passed and Tommy Jarvis has since been institutionalized. He is sent out to the Pinehurst Halfway House, which homes a large group of troubled youths.

After the death of one of the youth's, strange murders start to happen all around the Pinehurst area leading Tommy to think that Jason has come back to life and is looking to finish what he started.

The grown-up version of Tommy was not at all who I would have wanted him to be. A kid who they could have had become a real bad ass was turned into a shy, timid and nervous individual. Not matching any of the descriptions that he was in his film debut.

I really enjoyed the ending of this entry as it did not do anything crazy or out of the ordinary. They kept it very simple and it worked out well in my books.

I used to hate this movie as a kid due to the fact that I wanted to see a supernatural Jason kicking ass and what I got was a very plausible, real life-like story line that could happen to anybody in this day and age.

The kills in this one were freaking awesome! Most of them were original and innovative making the gore factor HUGE in this part of the franchise. I particularly like the belt kill as it's just gruesome as all hell! Can't ask for better than that in a slasher!

The whole time I had gotten bored maybe twice in between the kills, usually due to the Tommy scene's. But in all it held up very well and the kills made up for most of the crap it may have produced. It will receive a simple 7 out of 10.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Authorities are on scene where the grizzly murders at Higgen's Haven at the hands of Jason Voorhees has taken place.

Paramedics have gotten Jason's body packed up and shipped off to the morgue where he is set to be autopsied by the local coroner. But Jason has another plan in mind.

He awakens from his short slumber, kills the doctor and nurse on staff and heads back down to the lake where he runs into yet another group of camping teenagers and a family who live out there named the Jarvis'.

One of the characters we are introduced to in this movie is Tommy Jarvis, he will be a recurring character in some of the following films and is considered to be the main antagonist in the series, although he only appears in three of the films, he was used in most of the books and graphic novel versions of the series.

Other than the introduction of Tommy to the series, there is not too much good to say about this film other than the obvious excellence of most of the kills, notably the doctor kill at the start of the film.

They also made Tommy Jarvis an amateur special effects designer which he is able to use in order to stop Jason from attacking one of his victims. It brought out a lot of confusion for some people they I knew as they did not fully grasps why Tommy looked like he did by the end if the film. I would imagine the biggest issue they were having throughout this film was paying attention to the story line.

With all that being said I was never a big fan of this movie to begin with, nor was I a fan of Tommy's throughout the series. It always felt like they were trying to make the character more than he ever should have been.

But that could also be caused how they portrayed him in the following few films and as we are solely speaking about this film I will give it a 4.5 out of 10.

Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982)

Jason is back at it, in 3D this time!

We continue our story with Jason deciding to take a little field trip away from Crystal Lake to go visit Higgens Haven, a private camp down the way. But first, he decides to stop at the local country store for a change of clothes and a couple of quick kills.

As he continues on his way, he encounters yet another group of teenagers who have already set up camp at the Higgen's lot and decides he needs to do what he does best.

The basis of part three is pretty much the same as the first two with the added exception of the 3D element and the group of gang banger's that are basically there to give us a reason to cheer on the killer.

As odd as this movie may seem, the writing was a huge improvement from the second film as was the acting for the most part.

No matter what you think of this movie, it has one of the most important scenes in not only the franchises history, but the genre's history as well. This would be Jason's acquisition of the famous hockey mask that is now his trademark look.

Speaking of the acquisition of the mask, the kill immediately following is hands down, my favorite in the entire franchise! And with that being said and the importance of this film to the series, I give it an easy 7.5 out of 10.

Had it not been for the mask and my favorite kill, I could have simply given this one a much lower rating without hesitation

Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981)

We continue right where the last movie ended.

Alice laying in the boat, waving to the police. All of a sudden Jason pops out from under the water, grabs her and pulls her under with him. She awakens at the hospital to find that her friends were in fact, murdered, by the mad woman she dismembered.

But there was no signs in or out of the lake of the young boy whom she claimed to have been attacked by while in the boat.

Figuring the camp killer has been dismembered and will no longer be an issue, another businessman decides to set up shop by the lake and open up the campgrounds for the summer to try and make a profit.

As per the norm, the Camp is being stalked once again by an unknown force who does not want anybody on or around the lake.

This one was a perfect example of a pure slasher movie, excellent kills, quick and too the point and they got to properly introduce the now iconic Jason Voorheees.

They ending was done properly but the add on at the end before any of the authorities arrive is repetitive of another scene from a different film.

I'm please to say i liked it but the extra "scare factor" they tried to supply us with failed miserably and made me lower the score i would have given it, so this one gets 6.5 out of 10.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Camp Crystal Lake was shut down due to a string on ravenous murders. Because of this, the campgrounds have gained notoriety for being an area that nobody should enter.

Years after the grizzly murders, a group of teens get hired on as camp Councillors by the new property owner to help set up and repair the camp site in order to have it ready for the upcoming batch of children. This prompts somebody to come out of the woodwork to complete something they started long ago.

One of the all time greats, not only in horror movie history but in movie history in general. This film spawned a huge cult following and soon became one of the most widely recognized horror franchises of all time.

Hands down favorite kill in this film is the one involving an axe. Huge bloody mess that leads to nightmares is the only way to describe how people felt after seeing it for the first time.

I personally did not sleep for a week when I saw that scene for the first time at the ripe old age of 10.

Fantastic movie with a great story, amazing special effects, just like the Kevin Bacon murder scene for an example with an excellent soundtrack, (Ki-Ki-Ki-Ma-Ma-Ma) and overall, fantastic ending to go with it.

I do not think I have to say much more, I give this movie a 9 out of 10.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. Hocus Pocus? Isn't that a Disney movie? What kind of horror fan are you?

Well first off, it was my wife's pick. And second off, go to hell! This movie's awesome and it's about witches on Halloween, so it's still counts in my books.

Starting off with three witches living in Salem who have kidnapped a little girl in order to use her soul to make themselves younger. The young girl's brother tries to save her, but ultimately, is caught and transformed into a black cat who can never die.

The townsfolk go on a rampage and take the witches into custody and prepare them to be hung.
But right before they could be hung, the witches placed a curse, stating that if a person who is a virgin, lights a black candle left behind in their home on Halloween night, they would come back.

Three hundred years later, guess what happens?

The witches have been brought back to life and in order to make it past sunrise, they must sacrifice a child once again.

Made in 1993. Twenty years ago and the special effects still look amazing for it's time. A lot of the scenes with the cat talking still looked amazing and almost believable.

The biggest thing I love about this one is that it's a huge childhood memory of mine. The witch using the vacuum to fly instead of a broom, the witches singing "I put a spell on you" to put a spell on the crowd at the costume party. A zombie named Billy who is hilarious once he gets hold of a knife to cut open his sown mouth to call the lead witch a "wench" among other colorful (but non-offensive to children) words and sentences.

I have to give this movie an 8. Just a big pile of childhood memories and the special effects, again, look fantastic. It's a great story, and one that I will have my son watch when he is old enough to appreciate it.

Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

We being our tale with the help of our dear friend and everybody's favorite dream killer, Freddy Krueger, telling us the story of how he came to be and explains that if the children of Springwood remember him, it will able him to regain his power. In order to do this he enlists the help of the infamous, Crystal Lake killer himself, Jason Voohries to head over to Elm street and start creating havoc.

After the killing spree, rumors start creeping around town that Freddy is back and causing the deaths which gives him enough strength to come back and start haunting the young people of Springwood.

Until Jason starts getting in his way that is!

The movie itself is really fun to watch. I have been told by several people, those of whom are unaware of the back stories in the previous entries for both franchises, that the movie makes no sense them. I typically explain to them that this movie was basically made just to see who would win in a fight between the two. Hell, Vegas was even taking bets for the night the movie was released.

To me, it makes for one of the ultimate fan boy movies you could ever imagine. Especially for a kid who grew up with the title characters as huge genre influences

I give this an 8 out of 10. The story line wasn't bad, the kills could have been great had Freddy had the chance to play a little more in dream world. Over all Fantastic kills, especially the opener coming from Jason.

The final fight was just awesome and I (among many others) could have used a second round before the studio's decided that they needed to re-imagine the franchises. But regardless, I am happy with it and will take what I can get!

Child's Play 2 (1990)

Sorry Jack... Chucky's back!

After the events of the first movie, play pal toys acquired the crispy remains of the doll that was once claimed to be possessed by the lake shore strangler.

The company decided to rebuild the good guy doll from what salvageable remains it had. Soon thereafter, murder ensues.

Andy has been adopted by the Simpson family due to the fact that his mother has been locked up in the insane asylum for her testimony in the killer doll case.

He find a Good Guy doll stashed in his closet that the family had bought for him and in an effort to impress his newly adoptive parents, Andy decides to act like he is fine with the doll by bringing him around with him wherever he goes. Until it is actually revealed to be Chucky himself who came back to try and take over Andy's body once again.

Greatest kill of the movie by far has to be when Chucky goes after Andy's teacher. Just a classic moment in horror!

I love this movie, I think it is due to the upgrades in the special effects department which helped make Chucky look (for the most part) fluid in his motions and movements. Also a big part I like about this is the improvement in speed Chucky has as opposed to the first film.

I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. The third and final kills are more or less the reason why my rating is so high. The final kill is just gold, what better way to take out a serial killer?

Child's Play (1988)

Charles Lee Ray is on the run from the law and they are closing in on him.

Ray gets shot and run into a toy store in order to gain some cover.Ray happens to have an amulet that allows it's user to transfer their soul to another human or object.

As there is nobody around, Ray is forced to send his soul into one of the "Good Guy" dolls on display at the store. Thanks to this, the doll has now come to life and is ready to get back out into the world to find a suitable replacement for his body. Preferably that of a young boy named Andy's, the dolls new owner.

This movie never seems to get old to me as, in my opinion, still holds up to today's standards.
There are several awesome scenes in the movie, such as the car scene where Chucky tries to kill the cop while he is driving around. As well as the voodoo scene in where Chucky confronts the man who taught him how to send his soul to different beings, about the possibility of staying stuck as a doll for the rest of eternity.

The kill scenes are awesome and seeing a doll running around the house holding a knife has always creeped me the hell out. It just looks so evil and weird!

In closing, I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. Again, I think this movie still holds up on its own to this day due to it's originality and the amazing special effects for it's time that were used in most of the scenes.

Next up I will be reviewing the sequel to this classic!
